Who was Harry Winters?
Harry Winters was born on May 24, 1918 and died December 8, 1998. He was Willoughby's first Recreation Director. He started in the early 1950's when Willoughby passed its first recreation levy. Harry was Recreation Director for 20 years. This was a part time position in the City and was primarily a summer job at that time. During the remainder of the year Harry was a coach and Athletic Director at Willoughby Union High.
While head football coach at Union High in 1952 and 1953, the team won the Greater Cleveland Football Conference Championships. Two consecutive years.
In the late 1950's when North and South Highs were built, Harry became South High School’s first Athletic director and then the W-E Schools sports director, over the Athletic Directors at each of the High Schools and the Junior Highs.
Harry was a member of the Jaycees and South High Boosters. He has been inducted into the Willoughby Union High School Hall of Fame.
He also coached Varsity basketball and freshman baseball. His years of service to the District were commemorated by the naming of the Willoughby South football field Harry Winters Stadium.
The Union High Sports Hall of Fame became a reality because of Harry's vast collection of memorabilia, which was graciously donated by his wife Peggy after his passing.
